Examples of activities taking place during the Fortnight Print Email

People have taken part in diverse and imaginative ways from special assemblies and breakfasts in schools; military cooking competitions with the British Army; Thames Valley police serving British bobbies the best of British; 'food as art' exhibitions; cities celebrating car-free day filling their streets with stalls of local produce; events organised by the councils of Horsham, Bradford, Preston & Blackburn; a children's menu competition to encourage pubs to think 'Beyond the Chicken Nugget' and many more.

There have been tastings, food demonstrations and special menus at shops, pubs and restaurants across the country and British themed lunches in staff restaurants. National Trust chefs have competed to design the ultimate children's British food menu; the Youth Hostel Association has launched new local produce meals in all its hostels during the Fortnight; and churches have held special Harvest Festival services and religious leaders used the Fortnight as an opportunity to gather in London to discuss food as a means of improving inter faith understanding.

And there have been masses of fun and imaginative activities in schools.

Children have enjoyed talks by top chefs, local butchers and producers; had fruit and vegetable tastings; visited farms and local allotments; learnt how to make their own healthy snacks, meals and lunchboxes; dressed up as farmers, green-grocers and bakers; organised mini farmers markets in school halls; held Teddy Bear's Picnics and Mad-Hatter's Tea Parties using local produce and designed cook books to raise school funds. Some schools have incorporated food activities in all their lessons during the Fortnight and there has even been a special British Food Fortnight edition of Blue Peter.

Media coverage has reached over 106 million people and included: coverage in every national newspaper; a storyline on BBC Radio 4's The Archers; a special edition of Blue Peter and daily BFF recipes on teletext's homepage. Terry Wogan has announced on national radio that he wished that 'Every fortnight was British Food Fortnight'; and Cherie Blair at the 2003 Labour Party Conference picked up one of our leaflets and exclaimed, "Ah, British Food Fortnight - now that's a good idea!"
