Plans for 2008
|
The seventh British Food Fortnight takes place from 20 September to 5 October 2008 during Harvest Festival, the traditional time for celebrating our food.
The event will celebrate the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces with promotions and tastings in shops, all-British menus in pubs and restaurants, food and cookery lessons in schools and glorious food festivals. Whether you are shopping in supermarkets or local shops, or eating in pubs or restaurants you will be able to enjoy the best of British food during the Fortnight.

Aims & Opportunities |
|
|
|
The aim of British Food Fortnight is to:
- make the public and in particular young people aware
of the diverse and delicious food and drink that Britain produces
and the many food experiences available
- increase awareness of the health benefits and pleasures
- of eating quality, fresh, seasonal and regional produce
- increase the amount of food education in schools by encouraging
teachers to hold special events for young people during the fortnight
in the hope that this will generate the enthusiasm & interest
necessary to sustain similar activity year-round
- encourage producers, retailers, restaurants, pubs and tourism outlets
to all take a proactive role in educating the public and
in particular young people - about the food and drink that their region
produces.
And ultimately to nurture a renaissance in the pleasures of preparing
and eating regional food and drink.

Food as part of our heritage
Many of the foods and drinks promoted during British Food Fortnight
have a history as ancient as our castles and are as much a part
of the tapestry of our heritage. As national treasures, they need
a similar concerted effort to preserve them, particularly those
made by-hand by small producers.
The Fortnight provides fun opportunities for children to learn about the history of our food and drink; for pubs and restaurants to champion their region's produce; and for the tourism sector to promote regional food and drink as an integral part of the visitor experience.

The lack of food awareness amongst the public is one of the biggest
social issues in Britain today. If we do not educate people about the
nutritional benefits of eating fresh produce and how to cook it, we
run the risk of becoming a nation of people who only buy ready-made
meals and fast food and who shy away from buying fresh meat & vegetables
because we do not know how to cook them and have little understanding
of a balanced diet.
With nutrition and food education such a hot topic in the media and
government at the moment, NOW is the time to make significant in-roads in this area.
British Food Fortnight’s target is for:
- ALL major retailers and caterers to run a special British food and drink promotion during the Fortnight
- EVERY school to hold some sort of food activity during the Fortnight
…in the hope that this will generate the enthusiasm & interest necessary to sustain similar activity year-round.
